On the job learning
11-Sep-2011

In late August 2011, teacher trainees from Laidlaw’s School of Education descended upon Weymouth Primary School and Riverhead School for a ‘Service in Practice Day’ in each school.
Following a ‘Today the World’ theme, pairs of teacher trainees led a class for the day under the supervision of Laidlaw College lecturers and school staff. Encompassing and integrating various areas of the curriculum, classes experienced the sounds, sights, culture, dances, music, literature and stories, history, politics and geography, art and language of another country. Towards the end of the day, classes had the opportunity of walking through other classrooms to see what they had been doing. Fun was had by all!
For trainees it provided a professional experience of team teaching, peer observation and classroom management. They loved the interaction with the children and the challenge of being the teacher for the whole day. For Weymouth Primary School and Riverhead School it provided the opportunity for a day of professional development for the whole teaching staff.
